If you’re dreaming of a romantic, real, and unforgettable engagement session in Cedar Falls, this one is proof that a little rain can turn into something truly magical.
This spring engagement session started at Big Woods Lake and ended in the heart of downtown Cedar Falls, capturing both soft nature moments and fun, vibrant city energy.
And yes… we got caught in the rain. 🌧️
Starting at Big Woods Lake | Soft, Romantic, and Natural
We began the evening surrounded by the tall grasses and peaceful water views at Big Woods Lake, one of the best engagement photo locations in Cedar Falls.
The couple leaned into a relaxed, playful vibe, laying together in the grass, laughing, and soaking in the quiet beauty of the area. We got a few poses in before we realized the storm rolling in was in fact going to go right over us but this fun couple totally embraced the rain! Vibes straight out of The Notebook.
If you’re looking for engagement photos that feel:
Romantic
Natural
Timeless
The Big Woods Lake is always a perfect choice.
There’s something about rain that brings out genuine connection. The way they pulled closer, laughed through it, and didn’t take the moment too seriously made for some of the most emotional and authentic images of the entire session.
Rainy engagement sessions aren’t something to avoid. They are something to lean into!

Downtown Cedar Falls Engagement Photos | Fun + Personality
After the storm passed, we headed to Main Street Cedar Falls to switch things up and capture a more urban, playful feel.
Downtown Cedar Falls is one of the most underrated spots for engagement photos in Iowa. Between the brick walls, cozy storefronts, and warm evening light, it adds so much variety to a session, especially in the evening!
We made a stop at one of the couple’s favorite places, Uncle Harry's Five & Dime Tavern, which added a personal touch to their gallery. Including meaningful locations like this always helps tell a more complete story.
Dancing in the Rain to End the Night
To wrap up the evening, we stepped back outside… and the rain returned.
Instead of calling it, the couple danced in the rain together in the middle of downtown Cedar Falls. No stress, no pressure, just fully present with each other and in the moment.
It was the kind of moment you can’t plan, but always hope for.
And it ended up being the perfect way to finish a truly unforgettable engagement session.

What happens if it rains during your engagement session?
Rain might sound like a problem, but it can actually make your engagement photos even more unique and emotional. Light rain adds movement, reflection, and intimacy you just can’t replicate on a sunny day. Some of the most memorable sessions happen when couples embrace the weather instead of rescheduling.
Can we include meaningful locations in our engagement session?
Absolutely. Including places that are meaningful to you, like your favorite date spot such as Uncle Harry's Five & Dime Tavern, adds a personal and storytelling element to your photos. Try the local record store, our Tap Tap for a fun arcade feel, or even your favorite pizza joint. These locations often end up being the most special images in your gallery.
How long does an engagement session typically last?
Most engagement sessions last between 60–90 minutes. This allows enough time to visit multiple locations, capture a variety of poses, and let you relax into the experience so your photos feel natural and authentic.
Do you travel outside of Cedar Falls for engagement sessions?
Yes! While Cedar Falls and the Cedar Valley are incredible locations, I photograph engagement sessions throughout Iowa and beyond. If you have a specific vision or location in mind, I’m always up for an adventure!
