One of the first questions couples ask when planning their engagement session is, “Where should we take our photos?”
As a wedding photographer based in Waterloo, Iowa, I spend a lot of time exploring the Cedar Valley with couples during engagement sessions. The area around Waterloo and Cedar Falls has so many beautiful locations that work wonderfully for engagement photos, whether you love nature, water views, or a charming downtown setting.
If you are planning engagement photos in Waterloo or Cedar Falls, here are some of my favorite locations that photograph beautifully throughout the year.
George Wyth State Park
George Wyth State Park is a fantastic option for engagement photos near Waterloo and Cedar Falls. The park features lakes, walking trails, lake and river views, and wide open spaces that provide a relaxed and natural setting.
Couples who enjoy being outdoors often love this location because of the variety of scenery available. From lakeside views to tall grasses and wooded trails, George Wyth offers many different backdrops for photos.
Sunset along the water can create especially romantic lighting for engagement sessions.

Hartman Reserve Nature Center
Hartman Reserve is one of the most popular engagement photo locations in the Cedar Valley, and for good reason. The nature center offers wooded trails, open fields, and cool wooden bridges which creates a variety of beautiful backdrops.
One of the things couples love most about Hartman Reserve is the variety of scenery within a short walking distance. We can capture photos in the woods, with beautiful fall foliage (in October), and in open grassy areas all during the same session.
Golden hour at Hartman Reserve is especially beautiful, making it a perfect location for warm sunset engagement photos.

Downtown Cedar Falls
For couples who want a more urban feel to their engagement photos, downtown Cedar Falls is a wonderful option. The brick streets, historic buildings, storefronts, and charming alleyways provide a completely different look compared to nature locations.
Downtown sessions work well for couples who want photos that feel a little more modern or city-inspired while still staying close to home in the Cedar Valley.
We can also incorporate nearby parks or riverfront areas to create a mix of urban and natural scenery during the session.
Bonus points: pictures on Main St are even cooler once the sun goes down! Add in a little rain? It's like something straight out of The Notebook!

Big Woods Lake Recreation Area
Big Woods Lake is another beautiful location in Cedar Falls that works well for engagement sessions. The lake views, walking paths, and surrounding nature areas create a peaceful setting that photographs nicely throughout the year.
This location can be especially beautiful in the fall when the trees begin to change color. It also offers lovely evening light near the water during sunset.

Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
One of the biggest advantages of the Cedar Valley Arboretum is the variety of gardens and flowers throughout the year. Different areas bloom at different times, which means there is almost always something beautiful in season.
The arboretum provides a wide range of photo opportunities within a relatively small area. Couples can take photos among flower gardens, along tree-lined paths, near stone features, or in open grassy spaces.
Compared to some public parks, the arboretum often feels quieter and more peaceful. This helps couples relax during their engagement session and focus on enjoying the experience together.
This location does have a small entrance fee ($10 each) however, I buy a Photographer's Pass each year which gets our group in free!

How to Choose the Right Engagement Photo Location
Choosing the right location often comes down to your personalities as a couple and the style of photos you are hoping for.
Couples who love nature often gravitate toward parks and nature centers like Hartman Reserve or George Wyth State Park. Couples who want something a little more urban may prefer the character and charm of downtown Cedar Falls - or maybe a combo of both!
During the planning process, I always help couples think through the type of setting that will feel the most natural and meaningful for them. I'll share a list of my favorite local spots for you to choose from.
When to Schedule Engagement Photos in the Cedar Valley
Engagement sessions in the Waterloo and Cedar Falls area can be beautiful throughout much of the year, but each season offers something a little different.
Spring sessions bring fresh greenery and blooming trees. Summer evenings provide long days and warm golden light. Fall sessions often feature colorful leaves and cozy textures. Winter is one of my absolute favorite seasons for engagement sessions though!
Many couples choose to schedule their session about nine months to a year before their wedding.
